Choosing The Right EV Charger For Your Home

A home EV charger is a fast and convenient way to charge your electric vehicle. However, with so many different types and brands of chargers out there, it can be hard to know where to begin. Before diving headfirst into buying your first EV charger, keep in mind that they are not all made equal and you need to figure out what is best for your car, home and lifestyle.

Think about these questions before buying an EV charger:

  • Do I own my house or do I rent? If I am renting, do I have the landlord’s or body corporates’ permission to have an EV charger installed?
  • What sort of power does your house run on? Single-phase or 3-phase power?
  • What kind of switchboard do you have and is it up to date and built to deal with a sudden increase in power?
  • How often do you use your electric vehicle and how far are you usually travelling?
  • What kind of electric vehicle do you own?

Still unsure? Don’t worry! Our licensed and fully qualified electricians are always here to help and answer any questions about EV chargers you may have. Simply give us a call on 1300 375 048 or complete our online enquiry form today.

The Different EV Charging Levels

EV Chargers are split into two main categories: AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current).

Level 1 EV Charging

Level 1 electric vehicle chargers are the slowest and most accessible option for your home. This level of charging uses a standard household outlet, typically offering around 120 volts of AC. It’s convenient, but one of the major drawbacks is that it’s quite slow and will only give you around 10 to 20km per hour, depending on the make and model of your car. Level 1 EV chargers are best suited for those with short commutes or those who don’t drive it very often. To maximise its charging capacity, our team recommends that you charge your electric vehicle overnight.

Level 2 EV Charging

Like the name suggests, Level 2 EV chargers are much faster and cost-effective than Level 1 chargers. These types of chargers can be installed in all types of houses, apartments and townhouses.

Level 3 EV Charging

Level 3 charging is the fastest level of EV charger. It is usually found in public charging stations in carparks, shopping centres and commercial centres. Level 3 EV chargers convert 3-phase AC power to DC and charges your car in a matter of hours. However, these models are very expensive to run and better suited to large-scale commercial centres, not your home garage.

Switchboard Upgrades For EV Chargers

To get the most out of your EV charger, our electricians need to know that your home’s switchboard can handle it. In many older Sydney homes, the switchboards weren’t built for modern life’s technology and get easily overloaded. If you keep using an overloaded or outdated switchboard, it poses some dangerous safety risks, such as electrical fires.

Our licensed and qualified electricians ensure your new switchboard is installed correctly with the best safety switches and circuit breakers to prevent major electrical problems from happening. Our electricians always work to the highest standards, complying with the latest Australian safety rules and regulations.

3-Phase Power Solutions For EV Chargers

If you’re installing a Level 2 or Level 3 EV charger, you will need to upgrade your home’s electrical network from single-phase power to 3-phase power. 3-phase power uses a balanced load from your power grid, dividing the electrical currents equally across three phases. This results in faster and more efficient charging and doesn’t overload your switchboard.
